Brief Encounter
The Emma Rice/Kneehigh theatrical creation 'Brief Encounter' (based on the Noel Coward film of the same name) began life in the Haymarket Cinema, Piccadilly in London's West End. It was for the final few weeks of the run at the Haymarket that Edward joined the show. The show was then invited to tour the US, specifically the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, St Anns Warehouse in Brooklyn/New York and the Gutherie in Minneapolis. The show was reviewed by Ben Brantley of the New York Times as one of the ten best shows of 2009 (against all Broadway and off-Broadway shows) and the show was consequently invited to play on Broadway at Studio 54 in the summer of 2010, where it remained until January 2011 after being extended. The show is currently nominated for 2 Tony awards. In the show, Edward, as well as performing on and off stage, was also responsible for transcribing and arranging much of the music, as well as teaching many of the newer actors how to play existing parts on new instruments. Edward was also commissioned to write the score for the show, in order that it could be licensed to other company's to perform. So far, there have been two other productions that have relied on Edward's score - in Canada and Denmark.
